July 7, 2010 — After temperatures climbed into the triple digits Tuesday, Aquarion Water Co. experienced the highest customer demand in its 153-year history, delivering more than 140 million gallons throughout its system in Connecticut. The company wants residents in Simsbury and other towns serviced by the company to limit watering their lawns and gardens for the next seven days, doing so only on an odd-even system based on their addresses, from 5 to 9 a.m. or 7 to 9 p.m until at least July 14, 2010. It is also asking people over the next week to refrain from washing their cars and boats at home, turn off ornamental fountains and to cover pools when they are not in use to prevent evaporation. Aquarion has also asked cities and towns to refrain from washing streets, sidewalks, driveways, construction sites or parking areas, unless the Health Department deems not doing so to be a health or safety risk.
Beginning the week of June 28, 2010 Paine's will be implementing a new residential automated curbside single stream recycling collection system. This program will make it easier and more convenient for you to recycle. Paine's has issued new 95 gallon blue recycling containers. Starting June 28, 2010, your recycling collection will be performed every two weeks on the same day as your trash collection. Recycling collections will be done utilizing an "A" and "B" week schedule. Maple Court recycling pickup will be during the "A" weeks. Please see the enclosed calendar for the collection schedule. Trash will continue to be done weekly. The new service also features expanded recycling opportunities such as office paper, boxboard (cereal and tissue boxes), as well as all plastic containers labeled #1 through #7 except motor oil containers. Consult the recycling letter, schedule and flyer [PDF] from Paine's with more details on the newly enhanced service.
Bernice C. Martin, Maple Court's longest living former resident at age 104, is featured in the Winter 2009 issue of Seasons of the Farmington Valley magazine which is sent to Farmington Valley residents in the mail by the publisher. Mrs. Martin lived at 5 Maple Court from about 1929 until the 1950's with her husband, the late Garland Martin, and her children, the late Dale Martin (who also lived at 88 West St), and daughter Diana Martin Wildemann. Bernice lives at McLean in Simsbury. Both she and her husband worked for Ensign-Bickford Company. Past President Matthew Cook has had several opportunities to speak with her about life back in the day in Maple Court. She and her family have also helped us to piece together some of our neighborhood's history. To learn more about her life and Simsbury in the early 1900's read the Season's magazine article entitled "Cherishing the Gift of Long Life" [PDF] story by Diane Melton with a photograph by Michael Fiedler.
Paine's has informed us that our annual neighborhood live Christmas Tree Removal Day is MONDAY, January 11, 2010 for this holiday season. All Christmas trees must be left curbside, near where your trash can is normally placed, with the base of the trunk facing the street for easy removal. Trees must be out for removal on Monday, January 11, 2010 no later than 6:00 AM. Paine's also warns us not to put trees out so early that they get buried in the snow. Don't put them out by the street until the day before the pickup. They will only be removing the trees on Monday, January 11 so be sure all trees are out. They will not be returning any other day. Your cooperation with making this service easier for all is greatly appreciated. Download the Christmas Tree Removal letter from Paine's [PDF] as a reminder for your fridge. If you miss the neighborhood pickup, you may also discard the trees at the Town of Simsbury Bulky Waste/Recycling Center on Wolcott Road during their normal business hours (Wed. and Sat. from 8 AM - 3 PM).
Beginning December 1, 2009, MCHOA will begin to make weekly curbside recycling services available for all homeowners through our trash hauler, Paine's Inc. We will be distributing recycling bins to those without them shortly. Those already recycling will no longer be required to send Paine's individual homeowner checks. Existing Paine's recycling customers will receive a refund of costs paid in advance of December. The cost of this service is now included in the Association's recycling and refuse service contract with Paine's and is paid for through the current homeowners' assessment dues. For more details on what to recycle as well as further information about the service, please view the recycling flyer from MCHOA and Paine's [PDF] .

The Town of Simsbury has been named one of the top 100 Best Places to Live in the United States by Money Magazine in its recent August 2009 issue. Joined by the Connecticut towns of Tolland (#27), Somers (#55), Cheshire (#72), East Lyme (#75), and Trumbull (#77) on this list, Simsbury has been ranked #57 and described as "A quintessential New England community of cherry trees and fenced-in farmland [that has] retained its old-fashioned appeal." The periodical cited Simsbury’s airport, four beautiful state parks, and the International Skating Center as a few of the many reasons for this distinction.
